Tumamoc in Tucson

Hiking in Tucson, I had no idea where to start, but the first place I was told is a must is the Tumamoc trail.

As you know, I love hiking so this was my first exploration into the Tucson trails.  I love the feeling of fresh, crisp air on a steep climb, it’s so refreshing, and this trail definitely has some steep inclines.

It’s a little chilly to hike it in the morning or evening right now, but I love hiking it for sunset. When you reach the top, you can see the sprawling expanse of Tucson. Tucson is pretty large, so I enjoy seeing this bird’s eye view of it.

As the sun sets, it throws a golden glow on the neighboring mountain range. That view and the way the cacti grow dark are why I love going at sunset.

As you go up the hill, cacti stick up and out of the craggy rock face. The native plants are interesting as well with their spiky spines and pastel colors.

I always have this feeling that everything is dusty and pastel in the desert because the sun sleeps on the earth there for so much longer. It coats everything like a lounging cat.

The whole trail is paved which must come in handy with how well-used the trail is. I can imagine this is one of the most popular ones in Tucson, but it is very wide so it doesn’t normally feel too crowded.

I love this hike because it is on the shorter side, but has a great incline to stretch and challenge my legs. I’ve done it a few times since I’ve been here and enjoyed it each time.

If you want a good workout, jogging up the trail at a slow pace has my heart rate in the 180s. I take breaks along the way so I don’t get too winded, but I do see a lot of people jogging the full trail, props to them!

This trail is pretty accessible location wise since it is right outside of town. I’m sure most locals have gone up, but if you are visiting and want to do a unique site seeing activity, I would highly recommend this trail.

I will definitely be going up this trail many more times because I love getting out and stretching my legs in nature, a breath of fresh air some might say. However, I am stoked to explore the numerous trails in the area. Stay posted for the next ones I try!
