Dunsmir's Secret

Mossbrae Falls is one of my favorite places. I feel replenished and uplifted every time I visit. I could sit in front of this waterfall landscape for hours.

The waterfall is unconventional because it fans out across a cliff side instead of a main stream. It spreads over this luscious and vibrant green wall, a perfect example of serenity.

Swimming is a possibility because it is deep around the fall's base and to the right where the river flows. The water is incredibly freezing from the snow melt.

Being underneath the waterfall is magical though. If you can handle the water temperature, I would highly recommend it. Being under the water is a beautiful experience.

The hike itself is very unique. You walk along railroad tracks for about a mile. The walk is usually hot since there is no cover over the tracks.

Walking along the tracks is trespassing, so people can be fined. Another thing to watch out for are trains because these tracks are still very much in use. Always be listening and aware of your surroundings.

The tracks will eventually lead you to a large wooden bridge over the river. Before you go on the bridge, look to your right to see small foot paths leading into the tree line. Once you go through the trees and down to the river, the waterfall will be revealed.

Here are the directions to get to the train tracks:
  • Drive on I5 North until you get to exit 732 in Dunsmuir
  • Go left after the exit and follow the road until you go past a metal arch on your right
  • Park on the right side of the road
  • Walk to the arch which leads you down a hill and into a community
  • Go right when you get to the bottom of the hill
  • Go over a bridge to get to the train tracks
  • At the train tracks go right and keep walking
