Highest Peak in Arizona?

Recently moved and looking to get out and explore, Piestewa Peak offered a challenge from the get go. It raises above Phoenix with an elevation of 2,608 feet.

However, the original information I received was incorrect, and it is not the highest peak in Arizona.

This did not reduce the physical challenge the summit hike presented. Imagine massive rock stairs leading straight up to a peak with 360 degree views of Phoenix and other surrounding cities like Tempe.

For the difficulty level, the hike is well traveled. With good weather, parking can be hard to find and trail etiquette falls below a comfortable level. Patience and thank you's go a long way.

This peak is also called Squaw Peak and contributes to the Phoenix Mountain range. The name Piestewa can be traced to a fallen soldier. Her name was Lori Ann Piestewa, and she was one of the first-known female, Native American soldiers to die in combat.

The worn trail may prove to be difficult, but families, runners, and travelers make it to the top where many choose to rest on what feels like a tiny column of rock. This is a great time to refuel and hydrate.

Hiking up the first time almost killed me, and surprisingly enough, the second time was easier to tackle. It helps knowing what the terrain is like and the bodily strain. Sore legs and sunburn still persisted the second time around.

I recommend bringing water, snacks, and sunscreen (or a hat, both which I forgot). Since this is a popular trail, directions are easy to come by.

The heat of the summer will start sneaking up soon, so I hope to get a couple more summit hikes in before the rocks start baking!
