Cowles Hike- an alone adventure
Cowles Mountain is not too far from San Diego State which made it a convenient spot to get a really good hike in. It's nice to be able to get out, stretch your muscles and then die going up a mountain.
I do not mean to sound dramatic, but this hike was a challenge for me. I've hiked it before with three other friends, so I was surprised when I started to struggle since it was so much easier the first time I hiked it freshman year of college. As freshmen, we even hike a second peak after the main one.
Now, as a senior in college, I'm still in good shape, but I think the battle was more mental this time. Friends can be a great distraction from the struggle uphill also. When I'm alone, I have to dig deeper and motivate myself.
Overall, the hike is roughly three miles and has an elevation grade of 912 ft. It's all uphill and then all downhill – classic mountain. There is no tree or rock cover, so wear sunscreen. It was a toasty hike.
This hike is also very well populated. There are runners, dogs and all kinds of people. It is one of the more well known hikes in San Diego.
I struggled the most going up because of the elevation gain and mental battle. I was super tired and felt really sick. I almost quit when I was a little more than half way, but I hate quitting so I took short breaks and kept going.
It was embarrassing having to take breaks on the hike uphill because I am young and healthy, but I tried to block everyone else out and take care of myself.
It took me an hour to get up to the peak. I made it!
It was a huge accomplishment for me, and I was super proud of myself. I got to look out over the whole city and know I climbed the mountain by myself.
I sat on the ground for about 10 minutes, journaling. Then, I did a couple stretches and headed back down. It took me 30 minutes to get down.
I had a rough week which may have impacted the hike. I was feeling pretty lonely, and then hiking alone amplified it. I think it did help me work through some emotions.
