Julian Journey

As per my Facebook post, I had a back injury on Friday. I was supposed to hike to Potato Chip Rock Saturday morning, but getting out of bed was difficult enough.

For those of you who don't follow my Facebook page – please follow – here's what happened:

My right side including my leg, back and hip were really weak for a whole week. I rested it until I thought it was strong again, but when I worked out I think I pulled my lower back. The next day, I was at work when my back started to lock up and spasm. It got to the point where I couldn't move because of the spasms and pain, so I had to go to bed and hope for the best. I woke up in the same situation Saturday morning, but I was really upset because I could not hike. My boyfriend and I were supposed to go to Julian after hiking Potato Chip. My frustration spurred me to pull on jeans, and I heard a huge pop. After, I was more mobile because my back was not locked up anymore.

Most likely, the sacroiliac joint between the lower spine and pelvis was locked up which causes back spasms and pain. Then I unlocked it when I heard the pop.

I had always wanted to visit Julian, an hour out of San Diego. It's an old mining town with a small community. Lost of people go for different reasons, but a big three are the pies, the fall season and the cute atmosphere.

In San Diego, we don't really get fall. All the palm trees stay green and the beaches still have sand. I'm not complaining, but coming from a place where all the orchards turned red and then dropped their leaves, the seasons were very clear. I think that's one of the reasons a lot of people like to escape to Julian for a day because you get to see all of the fall trademarks. The leaves are changing colors, people are dressed for fall and all the stores are geared up for fall and Halloween. I loved being surrounded by the fall nature. There was a horse drawn carriage which added a festive feel too.
PIEEEEE! Pie was huge. Almost every store had some "famous" apple pie, it was insane. Some more prominent stores had lines down the street. Unpopular opinion, but I don't like pie. Any cooked fruit in bread is a no go for me. If you are a pie fan, you have to try some here.

I am a fan of beer though. Lucky for me, there was a small town brewery called Julian Beer Company. They had all kinds of brews to try. I tried the peach sour, but was very disappointed. It didn't taste like peach at all. It was just sour. My boyfriend got the honey wheat, but I was still disappointed because it was not very textured and missed the honey mark. The place itself was cute and I'm glad we tried it, but I don't think I would drink there again.

Coming to Julian here made me feel a little like home because of the small town vibe. Whether we were at the brewery, the diner or walking on the streets, everyone was nice, happy and social. It also didn't hurt that almost everyone had dogs. The whole town felt very homey. Small, old business lined the busy streets and people were having a blast.

It was really busy when we were there. I think the small town draws a lot of people from San Diego because of the size. San Diego is so big and busy, it's nice to step out and relax in a place like Julian.
